BCA applauds Province's decision to get Burnaby Hospital back on track and pushes for clearer timeline

BURNABY – The Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA) applauds today's decision by the Province to move forward with a renewed plan for Burnaby Hospital, starting with $210 million to expand and upgrade the hospital's emergency department and surgical unit.
The BCA's 2026 platform pledges to get Burnaby Hospital back on track and fight for Phase 2, including new beds and the cancer centre.
Work on the emergency and surgical upgrades begins immediately, with initial procurement to be completed in early 2027. The Province is also advancing plans for the cancer centre and acute care tower.
"This is great news for Burnaby. Anyone who's sat in an emergency room with a sick child or an aging parent knows why this matters. Locally we raised more than $55 million for this hospital and never stopped speaking up for it. Thank you to Minister Ma, Minister Kahlon, and our local Burnaby MLAs for listening. The BCA will keep working with the Province and pushing for a clear timeline to build the rest of Phase 2, including the new tower and the cancer centre."

The renewed plan includes:
A bigger emergency department: with 16 more treatment spaces and a new ambulance entry.
More surgical capacity: upgraded operating rooms and 17 more prep and recovery bays.
Better spaces for health-care workers: modern, purpose-built work areas.
The BCA will keep working with the Province until the new tower and the cancer centre are built.
